For the week of June 6 to 15 the following people need some help watering their plots while they are away Kelley - plot 2 Merlin plot 5 Frances - plot 17 Mandy - plot 11b
Seeds and tools are available for use at the the garden. Seeds by the water barrels - tools by the compost bin
Coming soon - mulch for pathways storage for tools.
Volunteers needed to help fill water barrels. Water is available to fill barrels monday to friday every evening. Pitch in if you can - if a water barrel is empty - help us keep them filled.
I can do Mandy's (I can't do more than that as I bring my two little ones with me and it is hard to keep them there for too long). Mandy, can we do a switch? I could do June 6 -15 and then could you do June 20 to 28? Let me know. THanks
Can someone help me figure out how to post? Am I on? I didn't get an option to sign my name, etc, and have no idea what all these "profiles" are. Sorry to be such a techno klutz. Anyone?
Third time's a charm I guess. I have figured out how to post but I have also figured our how you can touch something and the whole message vanished never to be recovered.
So....
I met a woman from the neighborhood at the garden this morning named Carol who stopped to chat. She was very delighted to find the garden and complimented everyone on their gumption in getting this together and on the love and courage it takes to plant and tend growing things. We exchanged some gardening fears (tomatoes and frost!) and foibles (waiting too long to pull the weeds). She noticed the yummy new mulch and admitted to its being very effective even though she keeps resisting to use it at home.
I pulled some weeds and watered some dry spots. Is anyone missing a bag of garlic cloves? I tucked them under the "seeds tarp." I've adopted Merlin's plot as babysitter. He is going to owe us, planting then going to France for what is it? a month? Merlin, are you back? you owe me a radish!
Can anyone help me work out how to run the taps? I tried the other night to fill up the barrels but got nothing. It's easy for me to come by so I'd love to be able to do it, if i can get a little demo?
The Community Garden Network has approached us to let us know they have FREE plant materials to Calgary community gardens.
The first offer they have is for cabbage plant seedlings.
If you are interested in obtaining these plants, please let us know by email (info@communitycrop.org) or this post how many you would like. We will contact you and let you know when they will be available for you to pick them up at the garden site.
There will be more goodies coming our way over the next few weeks, so keep checking this post.
If everyone could pitch and help out with watering the plots of vacationing or absent fellow gardeners that would be a huge help.
As you can see - plots requiring assistance are regularly posted so next time you are watering your plot and notice one of the listed plots being a bit dry - be neighbourly and put some water on it. The favour will be returned when you need help.
I have noticed some plots that are progressing slowly due to lack of water - these gardeners could use our help as well. If you see a very dry garden that is in urgent need of water consider giving a helping hand. A word of caution however. Watering in very hot weather can actually cause some plants to be burned by the hot sun. Especially tomato plants.
Hi all! I was wondering if someone would be able to help me out with watering my plot from June 30 to July 4. I think that my plot number is 18 (its the plot between the scarecrow and the volleyball courts).
Hey all, Check out an article in today's Calgary Herald featuring a cool street art project in our 'hood-- with quotes from Community Crop's very own Shauna Ernst. http://www.calgaryherald.com/news/Artist+takin+streets/1774088/story.html
We did a little work on the raised flower bed (aka old sod pile) this past weekend. There's still plenty of room to add more flowers--so, if anyone has any laying around that they'd like to get rid of, please feel free to find them a happy home on the old sod pile...I mean rasied flower bed.
I have to got out of town Tuesday-Friday this weekend unexpectedly due to business commitments. Can you check my plot Thursday or Friday for water? I will give it a good drink Monday PM.
I just wanted to let everyone know about an experience I had with the garden last week. Unfortunately after all of that (great week of) rain we had, myself and my two kids returned to our garden to water. We wanted to show our great aunt who was visiting from BC our wonderful Hallowe'en pumpkin (thanks for the seeds Francis!). I couldn't find it however, but found only the clipped vine!! We had been taking buds off the rest of the plant to nurture this pumpkin, so now we have nothing left. I know there have been a lot of cases of people having their harvests taken....so I returned to our garden the next day to put a note up.... While I was there , a family of 5 ( 4 adults and one preteen) exited from a van with a large bucket. They did not speak english and were pointing to various plots. I kept watching them, and they started to take shovels from the compost bin...I kept watching them...
Finally, the teen asked me if this (pointing to the whole garden) was my garden. I explained to him that each plot belongs to a family etc. I asked if they were members...he said no....they talked amongst themeselves for a bit..I explained that they may not take from the gardens and that it is very upsetting when people do this....they talked amongst themselves for a bit....pointing to the garden...discussing...the boy then said that they could take the compost right? I said (now I hope this is correct) that they may not as it will be used for the garden next year..... They then lingered for a while , discussed things, and piled back in to the van.....I am sure to return later. What can we do about this???
We experienced this as well on the weekend. A group of people went wandering around the gardens picking at whatever they wanted. We explained to them how it works, but I think some people don't understand. Can we get a sign or something?
Its a tough one, I can tell you no one was interested in taking Swiss Chard, or they thought I was growing trees! :-) Its tough its the high value crops (for gardeners) that always fall prey. Maybe some signage with information on how to join the garden at both the parking lot entrance.
I hear a frost is coming. I see corn, zucchini, swiss chard broccoli, parsley, spinach, pumpkins, carrots and beets still growing beautifully. I hope it gets harvested before it is too late.
May 29 2011. Noticed the sun this morning so ran pellmell out of my apartment to plant seeds. The ground was soft from the rain and I didn't feel I needed to worry about watering the seeds right away.
Best thing was my arugula from last year seeded itself so I had a field of tiny salad. Picked it roughly and had lots for lunch--how fun to get a harvest before planting.
Someone kindly plopped a chives plant in my plot, but I had to move it away--I don't eat onions or garlic at all. It's now in one of the "perennial zones." Thanks to whomever for this contribution to be shared by all.
